Jacaranda Social Club

The NECOM Director had a busy time entertaining the members of the Jacaranda Social Club, with an hour of sing-a-long songs at the piano. From the moment he opened with Bye Bye Blackbird, the enthusiastic patrons were on their feet singing and dancing. Russ (the NECOM Director) was joined by his 13-year-old son, Toby, who kept time on the cajon, a ‘drum box’ developed from the percussion instruments of Latin America. Other classic songs included I Still Call Australia Home, Hello Dolly and Fly Me To The Moon. In between songs, Russ related tales of growing up in Kingaroy, learning to play the piano by ear, and his love of folk music. NECOM is passionate about the role music plays in providing comfort to the elderly and triggering memories from decades past   -   many of the patrons had not heard these songs since last century, and yet they could recall every word.
