2016 AMTA (Armidale Music Teachers Association)
AMTA was formed as a professional music teachers association to promote excellence in music education through the sharing of resources, curriculum consultation and advice, professional development workshops, and collaborative projects.
In 2004, AMTA members voted to become an affiliated organisation with NECOM. This is a unique partnership of teachers in the New England region from both public and independent secondary schools, and associated Central schools, with a regional Conservatorium.
The role of the partnership between NECOM and AMTA is to:
- provide collegial support for music teachers in schools at all levels through mentoring, sharing of ideas and resources, regular meetings, discussions and other formal and informal activities
- assist NECOM to develop and deliver enhancement activities for primary and secondary music teachers and students in performance, composition and musicology eg HSC Music Workshops, Year 10 Music Day
- encourage, promote and support music education at all levels of learning
- advise and assist NECOM to provide relevant professional development in curriculum and pedagogy for teachers
- liaise with the Board of Studies to offer recommendations and suggestions concerning matters related to music education.
NECOM and AMTA meet twice a term to discuss topics ranging from Musica Viva in Schools program, the Eisteddfod, Composition workshops, HSC Music Workshops and examination needs, Board of Studies curriculum, potential Professional Development courses, teaching resources and ideas, National review into Music education etc.
2016 school curriculum projects and Special Projects include:
- Year 10 Music Workshop (Wed 9 March, 2016)
- HSC Music Workshop (Thurs 10 & Friday 11 March, 2016)
- Composition Eisteddfod & Workshop (Wed 18 May, 2016)
- Junior Orchestra Workshop (Wed 29 & Thurs 30 June, 2016)
- New England Sings! (Sat 15 & Sun 16 Oct, 2016) TBC

Armidale Symphony Orchestra 2016
The Armidale Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra that began as the Armidale Municipal Orchestra established in 1943. It has a wide and diverse membership ranging from enthusiastic amateur musicians in the community; professional studio, school and NECOM teachers; to talented senior secondary and UNE tertiary students.
The ASO presents an annual Concert Series of 3 concerts, in addition to the popular Kid’s Proms and jointly presented performances with other musical organisations such as the Armidale Choral Society, the Armidale Drama and Musical Society, and the Armidale Music Foundation’s annual March choral weekend.
The ASO amalgamated with NECOM as an affiliate partner in 2007 and resides at the NECOM Campus at the CB Newling Building in Armidale. It rehearses weekly on Monday evenings in the NECOM Orchestral Rehearsal Studio.

Armidale Youth Orchestras Association
The ARMIDALE YOUTH ORCHESTRAS Association was formed in 1968 as a volunteer organisation of family and community members to foster the playing of orchestral music amongst the youth of the Armidale district. It fulfils an educational role in developing the skills and musicianship needed in group music making, and also an important social function in encouraging an 'esprit de corps' in young people sharing similar interests.
The AYO parent association amalgamated with NECOM in 2006 and with NECOM administrative support, presents outstanding orchestral training programs to gifted and talented young musicians in Armidale and the region.
The Program supports intermediate and advanced orchestral training with the following ensembles - Armidale Youth Orchestra (AYO), Armidale Youth String Orchestra (AYSO), AYO Sinfonia, AYO Symphonic Winds and the Armidale Youth Wind Ensemble (AYWE) that is in recess for 2016. Its annual activities include 3 major performances a year, a Music camp at Sawtell, regional day or overnight tours, the biennial New England Sings! and other community events.
Members are aged from 12 to 25 years who have reached a suitable performing standard. Many members have gone onto great success with the Australian Youth Orchestra and professional careers in music eg Sydney Symphony violinist Jennifer Hoy and internationally acclaimed clarinettist David Griffiths.
The orchestra has performed in many venues across the New England region and has toured to Newcastle, Brisbane, New Zealand, Tasmania, outback NSW and southern Queensland.
